Harvard University
Students need not have any background in architecture to apply to this program. They complete rigorous coursework in subjects such as professional practice, architecture history and theory, technology and the social environment. For students who have already earned a professional Bachelor’s in Architecture, the program allows students to cultivate advanced theoretical and analytical skills over two years of full-time study. Students must complete advanced design research either through a thesis or a “super studio” experience.

Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation
It is a three-year-long program wherein students can explore the concepts and practice of creating architecture, technology, design, visual studies, and architectural theory and methods. They spend much of their time honing their skills in the design studio, but will also study the social, historical, cultural, economic and technical factors that influence architecture.

Yale University
For students who have a bachelor’s degree in any subject, the Master of Architecture I program focusses on the foundations and trains students to pursue a career as full-time architects over three years. Students with a Bachelor of Architecture degree can increase their theoretical knowledge and design skills through the two-year Master of Architecture II program. M.Arch students can also pursue a joint degree program that combines architectural studies with coursework in business, environmental management or environmental design.

Massachusetts Institute Of Technology
The National Architectural Accrediting Board has accredited MIT’s Master of Architecture degree. The program makes extensive use of design studios. A design thesis and courses in architectural culture, building technology, computation in architecture, sustainability and urban theory make up the course content of a three and a half year program. Graduation equips the students with the requirements to earn a professional license or registration.

Cornell University
The Cornell University College of Art, Architecture, and Planning has a three-degree option at the graduate level. The three-and-a-half-year program prepares students to get a license or registration as a professional architect through intensive studio work, a design thesis, and coursework. Students spend three semesters in an intensive interdisciplinary study of a specialized topic such as Architecture and Discourse, Architecture and Ecology or Architecture and Urbanism.

University of Pennsylvania
PennDesign offers a few options of study at the graduate level of architecture education. Design studios make up the core of the program, but students also take coursework in a variety of subjects. While the program typically takes three years, students with a nonprofessional educational background in architecture may be able to complete it in two.
