The USA is the most popular, coveted study abroad destination for international students due to the attractive opportunities, it provides for career and personal growth. On 7th November 2020, Joe Biden was elected as the 46th President of the United States of America. This brought in a wave of optimism not just for the people of America, but for the population all around the world.

ReachIvy.com student Raj Verma said, “With Biden coming in, I’m so glad we took the right decision to defer my program for a year and now I am excited to study in the US with so many growing opportunities and less stress about post-education opportunities in the USA.” Like Raj, many international students who were affected by the Covid-19 crisis have now found a new ray of hope as with the Biden election, the US will be more welcoming of international students and skilled migrants and international talent will regain work opportunities in the US.

Over the last few years, the number of green card holders, students, and H1-B visas have been steadily declining. According to an article in the New Indian Express, In 2019, there was an 8.9% decline in issuing green cards to Indians and over 3 lakhs drop in H1B Visa applications. One of the main concerns for Indian students had been the restrictive policies of the government. Because of these policies, uncertainty and fear amongst students had risen.

However, people believed that once Biden comes into power there would be some relaxation in the visa regime and policymaking and that more Indian students would be welcomed to apply for further studies. Although President-elect, Joe Biden has never openly discussed this, its the party values that is raising hopes of international education experts. Thus, H1B restrictions will be eased, which is great news for students, especially for Indian candidates. These students will now be able to look for better opportunities in the job market. As stated in the Times of India article, Currently the number of H1B visas is capped at 85,000 per year. According to Biden’s updated plan, he will be increasing the number of high-skilled visas including H1B.

Due to the Trump administration’s regulations for international students, the situation was tough on overseas job seekers. However, Biden has pledged to revive the USA as an attractive destination for talent from across the globe. Various steps have been taken so that students can stay on and work in the US, such as expanding the number of visas for the highly skilled and exempting foreign graduates of US doctoral programs from green card cap. So, there will be no cap on visas given. Also, the limit on employment-based H1B visas will be removed. This will be a great advantage for Indian professionals working in the US.

According to reports, the previous government’s ‘specialty’ occupation, firms couldn’t hire overseas workers with just any degree. So, the workers would need to have a degree that was specific to the job under the specialty occupation. Now, Biden, along with Congress will do away with the limits on employment-based visas by country. The H1B visa holders will have to work and reside in the city or specific county petitioned to them. Being a supporter of family-based immigration, Biden will permit applicants along with a temporary non-immigrant visa until a permanent visa is processed. Thus, spouses and children of green card holders can be their immediate relatives and will therefore be exempted from any kind of limits.

Thus, the current situation seems to be extremely favourable for international students. The changes brought in by the Biden government will help the students explore top-quality educational opportunities in the US, which in turn will enable them to better their future prospects, and realize the American dream.
