So you think you want to study abroad? That’s an excellent start, but what now? Get started on your application of course. Or maybe not. You might have missed a few steps in this plan. There is more to studying abroad than meets the eye. And you only find out about them when you actually start doing your research. From choosing the course, college, and country to visa rules and financing, there is a lot to do. Here are a few questions that you should ask before you start your application:

1. Whose study abroad experience inspires me?
Find a role model or mentor. They need not be your relative. Essentially, find someone to motivate and inspire you from the industry you want to enter. Understand their journey and experiences. You don’t have to copy them, but you can learn from them. It will give you an idea of the opportunities and challenges that await you in your dream school.

2. What will be the return on investment for my course?
Money is not everything, but it is one consideration. Let’s say you are going for a postgraduate and choosing between one- or two-year courses. You might think that taking a one-year course may ease up any financial constraints. However, there is also the fact that the summer break in a two-year course may give you the opportunity to get work experience, take up an internship, and more. The point of education abroad is to clarify your future goals and develop skills. So the time and effort you put in should be returned in terms of employability and network.

3. What do I want to take back from the course?
This is somewhat of a broad and abstract course; it is important to know the ‘why’ of going abroad. Getting a degree, boosting your profile, employability, etc. are common reasons. We urge you to dig deeper. All of these will likely come your way even if you put in the bare minimum to get through college. Are you willing to go a step further? Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity to try out all that you want in terms of personality development, extracurriculars, and securing that internship with your dream company. These experiences require you to put yourself out of your comfort zone and risk rejection. Keep trying and keep failing. You never know when you hit the right opportunity.
