Use the acronym ‘SMART’ as a powerful and effective framework to set actionable goals. This way, you will be able to create and meet well-defined objectives! Let’s break down each component of SMART goal setting:

  1. Specific: A specific goal defines exactly what you want to accomplish. It provides answers to the questions: who, what, where, when, and why. Avoid vague statements and be specific about the outcome you want.

Example: Instead of a generic goal like “Improve my fitness,” a specific goal would be “Cycle 20km in under an hour by the end of the year.”

  1. Measurable: A measurable goal includes specific criteria for tracking progress and determining when the goal has been met. It allows you to quantify your success and stay motivated.

Example: “Increase sales by 30% in the next financial year”

  1. Achievable: An achievable goal is one that is realistic and within your capabilities to reach. It should challenge you, but not so far that it becomes unattainable.

Example: Setting a goal of running a marathon in a month may be unrealistic if you have never run before. It would be more feasible to begin with a 5k or 10k race.

  1. Relevant: A relevant goal is one that is in line with your long-term goals and values. It should be meaningful and beneficial to your personal or professional development.

Example: if you want to be a software engineer, enrolling in a coding bootcamp to learn relevant programming skills would be beneficial.

  1. Time-bound: A time-bound goal has a set completion date or window of time. Setting a deadline creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay on track.

Example: “Complete my certification course in search engine optimization within six months” is a time-bound goal with a clear deadline.

As you can see, the SMART goal-setting approach will allow you to set clear, achievable, and purposeful objectives. These will provide you with a sense of purpose, motivation, and a better chance of success in your personal and professional endeavours.
