The right mindset for studying

If you’re either in school/college or going to start classes soon, this one is for you. As a student, the daily grind of hustling, studying, going for extracurriculars, maintaining a social life and more can be tiring. And when you have to do this on a daily basis, keeping up motivation becomes a challenge. Here are some ways that you can boost your energy and motivation. Read on!Jet, set, go!

Goals
When you are sitting down to study at the start of the day, you may be tempted to set a long to-do list. Imagine it looks something like this:
Read 5 chapters of the History textbook.
Solve 10 calculus problems.
Write the 1,500-word essay in 2 hours.
The problem with this list is not that is not comprehensive, it is. The problem is that it is over-ambitious. You may well complete it throughout the day, but such a heavy goal adds tremendous pressure. Break them down into bite-sized, manageable tasks. If need be set up a reward system. If I finish reading one chapter in the next hour, I will listen to one of my favorite songs.

Get in the Zone
This is an incredible subject. Some people work well with ambient noise, whereas others need absolute silence. There is no one right way to work. If you need to pace and talk with animated gestures to understand a concept, do that. Study in proper clothes if that makes you feel put together. Change your environment occasionally. It is up to you, but create an environment that makes it easier for you to study. Have things within your reach so that you don’t have to keep getting up to get stationary or books, thereby leasing to further distraction.

Meet family and friends
Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Only once you are away done do you truly realize how much you miss the little things that home had to offer. Make time for your family and friends, meet them. Memories like these are a reminder of the support system you have back home. Once you leave, be sure to stay in touch as well. At the same time, try to make friends abroad. You may be an introvert but think of this as a fresh start where you can choose the impression you want to create among your peers. Nobody is bound by their personality so long as they choose to grow and keep learning.

Tracking
Keep a track of your progress. Remember those goals you set? Mark them down once you accomplish them. Not only will it give you the satisfaction of knowing how far you’ve come but also help you strategize to work in the future. You may notice that you are able to study best in the morning, you can schedule your day to relax in the evenings. At the same time, it is okay to fail. You need not accomplish everything. Even if failure teaches you something, you will know what doesn’t work for you or what area of improvement there is.

Breaks
Take time off. Don’t immerse yourself into your books 24/7. There is a whole world out there, go out and meet it. Meet your friends, visit the museum or catch a movie. Give yourself time to recuperate from all the learning. Besides, it gives you the time to digest all the information that you have taken in. All of this can be managed when you plan well. No plan is set in stone, so feel free to adjust and be flexible. This will also give you time for your non-academic pursuits.

If you still struggle, remember that change takes time. Building a habit is like building a muscle, with regular practice and discipline you can achieve all that you want. Little by little you will see big outcomes. Good luck!
