Reading Time: 2 minutes

In school and in the workspace, you will often be faced with the mundane task of doing some research. And on more than one occasion, you must have dreaded it. There is a lot of effort and time dedicated to something that might not always reap results. However, stop to consider whether you are researching in the most efficient manner. As a student, in particular, knowing how to research can be invaluable. Here’s how you can learn:

1.Google is your best friend
Yes, this is where your research starts and ends. But you probably don’t know exactly how to search the terms you need. Narrow down your search by using Google Scholar for research papers and academic articles. Using quotation marks around the term you are looking up gives you the exact results you need. You can also apply .ppt and .pdf extensions to help your search.

2.Browsing books
You don’t have to read entire books, but you should certainly browse the index and contents. This serves two purposes: 1. You can locate what you’re looking for without having to read 200 pages. 2. The next time you are researching on a similar topic, you will already have a brief idea of what information can be found where.

3.Quality over quantity
A few excellent sources will always trump a dozen mediocre ones. So how do you find the wheat among the husk? Look at the journals in which these papers are published. If they are reputed, have a well-developed audience, and are accepted by important platforms as sources, you have hit the jackpot. The amount of citations that such sources have is also a good indicator. Most importantly, don’t force the source to fit your research. If it doesn’t serve your topic, drop it regardless of how popular it may be. If you can’t find enough sources, consider broadening the scope of your topic.
