We live in a fast-paced and exciting world. We are a part of a society that is witnessing magnificent technological changes. As a student waiting to enter the “real world”, the reality can be intimidating. Each student faces challenges related to achieving more and competing with a sea of talent. To do this, you need to be able to put in your best efforts and drive your dreams with passion. It is easy to fall back, give up and accept the average as your comfort zone. However, if you want to create a legacy and play a part in this dynamic world, you have to work for it. In this pursuit, the ability to stay focussed on your goals goes a long way.

When distractions tempt you, your dreams must take the forefront. So, here are a few ways that you can build your focus for long hours and stay committed to your passion. Putting in your sweat and blood is never easy, and that is what makes the fruit you reap sweeter.

1. To-Do List
Let’s start with something easy. Begin your day by noting down what you need to get done. Allocate enough time to each task as well. You can use a pen and paper or a note-taking application. The idea is to note down your day’s tasks onto something tangible. It frees up your headspace for more relevant information. Moreover, the satisfaction of ticking off the things on your to-do list is incomparable.

2. Pomodoro Technique
Many research papers and studies swear by this method. In this, you set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a 5-minute break at the end of each session. Every study block must be without distractions. It is a way to stay focused for shorter periods throughout the day. Make sure to increase the duration of every fourth break. If you feel confident, you can increase the time of your study session as well. The flexibility and accountability make this method effective.
Pro-tip: Use a proper timer instead of your phone, if possible, to limit distractions.

3. Snacks and Water
Keep yourself nourished and hydrated throughout the day. A hungry stomach gets in the way of your productivity. At the same time, avoid sugar-rich foods that will give you a short boost but, will cause you to crash later. Commonly suggested foods include fresh fruits, nuts, granola bars etc. Similarly, consume enough water throughout the day especially, if your work involves screen time. Water cleanses your body and keeps it feeling fresh. When you take spaced-out breaks, splash some water on your face to freshen up.

4. Exercise
You may think that you do not have time to exercise yet, you need to take the time to take care of yourself physically. Sitting at your desk for long hours can cramp up your muscles and make you feel lousy. Get up to stretch, walk around or do some light yoga. Exercise releases endorphins which leave you with a feeling of positivity. While you’re working your mental muscle, be sure to exercise your body as well.

5. Sleep
Lastly and perhaps, most importantly, get enough sleep. While the occasional all-nighter is alright, staying up late consistently to study will have the opposite effects on your productivity and focus. Sleep-deprivation causes fatigue, reduces immunity and increases stress. Sleep hygiene sets your body to a natural rhythm and consolidates your memory. Maintain a sleep cycle to boost your concentration.

These are some of the best ways to increase your focus and stay on the tasks at hand. Figure out what other methods work for you and incorporate them into your daily routine. Note here, that studying or working all day long is not the way to achieving your dreams. Spend time with your family and friends. Also, take some time off to rejuvenate and take care of your mental health. The road to your dreams is only as strong as your health and personal relationships. Go ahead and make your dreams come true.
