Are you planning to study abroad? Do you need to take the SAT or ACT but don’t know where to begin? Want to understand the subjects covered, test formats, and how to best prepare? ReachIvy.com is here to help!

The SAT and ACT are standardized tests widely used for college admissions in the United States. These exams assess a student’s readiness for college and consist of sections in Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. SAT scores range from 400 to 1600, while ACT scores range from 1 to 36. You can easily convert your scores using our SAT to ACT Score Converter tool. The essay section is optional and is reported separately.

  1. The SAT consists of 154 questions and is 3 hours long (plus 50 minutes if you take the essay). The ACT is 2 hours 55 minutes without the optional essay, or 3 hours 35 minutes with the essay.
  2. Most 4-year colleges require you to take the SAT or ACT so they can compare applicants from different high schools around the world.
  3. High standardized test scores may also help you qualify for scholarships. Many colleges and organizations award scholarship funds based on SAT or ACT scores.
  4. Some colleges require SAT Subject Tests (SAT II) in addition to the SAT. These are hour-long, subject-specific exams to demonstrate your strengths. There are 20 SAT Subject Tests in five areas: English, History, Languages, Mathematics, and Science. (The ACT covers English, Math, Reading, and Science.)
  5. Subject Tests allow you to differentiate yourself in the admission process or show your readiness for particular majors or courses.
  6. Take the tests that are required or recommended by the colleges you’re interested in. For example, engineering applicants may need to take Math Subject Tests.
  7. You can retake the SAT or ACT, and most colleges will consider your highest score. Note: Many US colleges now have “test-flexible” or “test-optional” policies, meaning standardized tests may be optional or flexible for admission. Check individual college requirements for clarity.
  8. Prepare thoroughly for your tests to maximize your scores and boost your application.
