Duke University is a private, non-profit, research university that was founded in 1838 by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day town of Trinity. The University has had many different names in the past viz. Brown School, Union Institute, Normal College and Trinity College. Duke undergraduates enjoy opportunities to engage in original research and receive mentorship by world-class faculty. The Undergraduate Research Support Office identifies grants and assistantships for undergraduate projects and summer programs. The Howard Hughes Undergraduate Program, the Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy, the Pratt School of Engineering and a variety of departmental programs offer summer opportunities for first-, second- and third-year students. Since 1892, the campus is located in the city of Durham in North Carolina, United States.
